Prepare for your appointment

Correct preparation is important for an accurate hydrogen and methane breath test result.

Prescribed medication

You must consult your doctor before discontinuing any prescribed medication.

Antibiotics

Wait at least one month after taking antibiotics unless otherwise advised.

Bowel preparation and supplements

Avoid colonoscopy bowel preparation, probiotics and herbal antimicrobial supplements unless retesting.

Digestive aids and laxatives

Refrain from digestive enzymes, laxatives and bulking agents.

24-48 hours

Restricted diet and fasting

Follow the restricted diet for 12 hours, or 36 hours if constipated, followed by a 12-hour water-only fast.
