World Digestive Health Day 2026: The Future of Hydrogen and Methane Breath Testing
At GastroLife, we are passionate about improving access to accurate, non-invasive digestive health diagnostics. To mark World Digestive Health Day 2026, our Clinical Director, Melissa Dooley, was invited to write an article for Bedfont Scientific exploring how hydrogen and methane breath testing has evolved and where this technology is heading in the future. Over the past decade, hydrogen and methane breath testing has become an increasingly important diagnostic tool for investigating conditions such as Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth (IMO), and carbohydrate malabsorption. What was once considered an emerging technology is now supported by international consensus guidelines and is widely recognised as a safe, non-invasive investigation when performed using standardised protocols.
The article discusses the evolution of breath testing, highlighting the move away from invasive diagnostic procedures towards patient-friendly testing. It also explores the importance of measuring both hydrogen and methane, advances in diagnostic technology, and the growing role of standardised protocols in improving the quality and consistency of breath testing worldwide.
As clinical evidence continues to grow, breath testing is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in helping healthcare professionals investigate chronic symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation and food intolerances. Ongoing research and technological innovation are expected to further improve test performance, interpretation and accessibility, helping clinicians provide more targeted investigations and treatment pathways.
We are proud to contribute to the advancement of digestive healthcare through education, research and high-quality diagnostic testing.
